Eugene Ginter
Eugene Ginter was born in 1939 in Kraków, Poland. During the Nazi occupation of Poland, Eugene spent his time in the Kraków ghetto and later Płaszów concentration camp, Gross-Rosen, Brünnlitz labor camp, and Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Eugene was liberated from Auschwitz on January 27, 1945, just twelve days shy of his sixth birthday. After a stay in a hospital followed by a Jewish orphanage, miraculously, Eugene’s mother, whom Oskar Schindler had saved, found Eugene in the orphanage. Together, they traveled to Czechoslovakia and then Austria, where they reunited with his father.
In 1950, Eugene and his family emigrated to the US, where he eventually became a mechanical engineer. He has been married to his wife, Rachelle, for the past fifty years. They have one daughter and two grandchildren. Eugene and Rachelle live in New York.
In 2020, Eugene joined our Foundation’s delegation to Auschwitz-Birkenau to mark the 75th anniversary of the camp’s liberation.
Eugene is also one of the remarkable contributors to our Foundation’s cookbook, Honey Cake & Latkes: Recipes from the Old World by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Survivors.
